Since the inception of our movement, we have strategically engaged in electoral politics and civic engagement to build Pueblo power.
Our approach is best described by the words of civil rights leader César Chávez: “We don’t need perfect political systems; we need perfect participation.”
These systems were once designed to exclude working families, immigrants, and people of color. Often, the choices at the ballot box are not in perfect alignment with our movement. But between the choice of disengagement or organizing, our choice has always been to be brave and organize alongside our people to defend our rights, our freedoms, and our families.
Our historic victories are proof of the importance of organizing in politics. Together, we passed legislation that provided drinking water and clean toilets in the fields for farm workers. We forced pesticide controls to protect children and workers from being poisoned while they earned a living. We defended U.S. Citizen children of undocumented parents when they were denied their birth certificates. And to this day, we fight for the rights of working class families in colonias, many of whom are immigrants and come from mixed-status homes.
The civil and human rights of immigrants are of utmost priority for LUPE Votes. While some politicians may irresponsibly choose to mischaracterize the border and immigration, we know the truth: the border is beautiful and immigration is a human right.
In these final weeks before the historic 2024 Election, we will continue to organize to elect candidates who will give our movement the best chance to win what our families deserve. We urge South Texas voters to reject Trump and Republicans’ extremist agenda and elect the Democrats who best represent our values and get us closer to our vision for America.
LUPE votes will remain focused on keeping Trumpism out of the White House and Congress, and we are ready to continue organizing and holding politicians accountable for generations to come.
